Lowest Deck, Middle Deck, Top Deck
On most European ships the lowest passenger deck has fixed windows near the waterline, set high in the wall; the middle and upper decks carry the balconies. Higher decks can mean more engine-free quiet and a better view, but also more steps to the restaurant on ships whose elevators do not reach every deck. Compare deck plans as carefully as cabin names.
River Cruise Cabins: FAQ
What is a French balcony?
A floor-to-ceiling door or window that opens with a railing outside, but no space to step out onto. It leaves more room inside the cabin than a full balcony.
Is a full balcony worth it on a river?
Many travelers find French balconies enough because so much time is spent on deck and ashore. Others love sitting out as the river slides by. Compare cabin size as well as balcony type before deciding.
Choosing Between Cabin Ideas
Each line’s cabin idea answers a different question. A French balcony gives you fresh air and the view while keeping the floor space inside. A step-out balcony lets you sit outside with a coffee as the river slides by. Twin balconies try to give you both. A Panorama-style window that opens wall to wall turns the whole cabin into a balcony on warm days, and a Sun Lounge-style space closes into an indoor sitting area when the weather turns. Suites add room, a separate seating area and, on some lines, butler service.
